The semi-natural, unfertilized pastures formed by traditional European agricultural methods, were managed & maintained by the grazing of livestock. Because the ecological impact of this land-management strategy, the centuries-old agricultural system usually shared many beneficial characteristics with a natural habitat including the promotion of biodiversity. This strategy is rapidly declining in Europe due to the intensification of plant agriculture, & the mechanized, chemical-based methods which gained prominance from the industrial revolution on.
