1720s-30s English houses & landscapes by Peter Tillemans (1684–1734)
Peter Tillemans (Flemish artist, 1684–1734) A View of the Garden and Main Parterre of Winchendon House, Buckinghamshire, from the East, with Figures in the Foreground
Peter Tillemans (c. 1684-1734) was a Flemish painter, best known for his works on sporting & topographical subjects. Tillemans was born in Antwerp, the son of a diamond-cutter, & studied painting there. He was brother-in-law to fellow artist Peter Casteels (1684-1749); & in 1708 the two young men were brought over to England by a dealer named Turner to copy Old Master paintings. By 1711, he had joined Godfrey Kneller's (1646-1723) new Great Queen Street Academy of painting as a founding member, where Tillemans declared his speciality as 'landskip'. He later joined the Society of St Luke (and was its Steward, 1725). Tillemans lived chiefly in Westminster, but traveled to execute commissions. By 1715, he had acquired his most faithful patron, Dr Cox Macro of Suffolk. In his country landscapes with gardens paintings, the houses often stand in a countryside brought to life by animals & hunting scenes. He was employed with Joseph Goupy to paint a series of scenes for the opera-house in the Haymarket. In 1719, he was commissioned by the antiquary John Bridges (1666-1724) to make about 500 drawings for the History of Northamptonshire. These drawings were all executed in Indian ink, for which Bridges gave him a guinea a day & the run of his house. Tillemans resided for some years at Richmond in Surrey, where is brother-in-law lived. He also stayed at the home of his patron Dr. Cox Macro of Norton Haugh in Suffolk, where he died on 5 Dec. 1734.

1738 Hartwell House garden - 8 views by Balthasar Nebot (1700-1770)
1738 Balthasar Nebot (Spanish-born British artist, 1700-1770) The Allees &Arcades behind Hartwell House, Buckinghamshire. This view of gardeners clipping hedges, removing cut grass, & rolling the walks was painted from the steps in front of the menagerie looking down towards the long canal. The topiary arcades create views down to the long canal & to Aylesbury beyond.
When Sir Thomas Lee (1687-1749) married a wealthy heiress, Elizabeth Sandys, in 1720, he began to transform the Hartwell gardens. He brought in the architect James Gibbs to build an Egyptian obelisk & pyramid; classical temples inspired by Greece & Rome; columns; statues; a menagerie; & a Gothic tower. Lee commissioned Balthasar Nebot, a little-known Spanish painter, based in Covent Garden, to paint 8 views of his gardens & grounds. The people of Hartwell – family, visitors, household & estate staff &, especially the gardeners – are also portrayed in great detail.
1738 Balthasar Nebot (Spanish-born British artist, 1700-1770) The Bowling Green & the Octagon Pond, Hartwell House, Buckinghamshire. Gentlemen play a game of bowls on the green in front of the house.
1738 Balthasar Nebot (Spanish-born British artist, 1700-1770) The Long Canal &Gibbs Temple, Hartwell House, Buckinghamshire. Here is a ha-haa wall set in a ditch that kept the animals out, while not interrupting the view of the landscape.
1738 Balthasar Nebot (Spanish-born British artist, 1700-1770) The North West Woodlands with Gardeners Scything, Hartwell House, Buckinghamshire. The man & woman could look north past the statue through the wilderness to the countryside beyond, while they talk. Gardeners are maintaining the grasses with scythes as the servants chat.
1738 Balthasar Nebot (Spanish-born British artist, 1700-1770) The Octagon Pond, Hartwell House, Buckinghamshire. This view looks out from the octagon pavilion across the octagon pond to Aylesbury. Guests stroll through the topiary arcades & around the long canal. The house can be seen to the right.
1738 Balthasar Nebot (Spanish-born British artist, 1700-1770) The Topiary Arcades & George II Column, Hartwell House, Buckinghamshire. Here the mature topiary creates dramatic architectural forms. The central avenue leads up to the column with the William III statue, the right reveals a bust of John Hampden, & the left leads to the menagerie. To the left can be seen part of the front of the house with an angel above the window.
1738 Balthasar Nebot (Spanish-born British artist, 1700-1770) The Topiary Exhedra with a View of the Obelisk, Hartwell House, Buckinghamshire. Here riders gather at the mature topiary exhedra, created by carefully training & clipping evergreens to form pieces of green architecture.
1738 Balthasar Nebot (Spanish-born British artist, 1700-1770) The Wilderness, Hartwell House, Buckinghamshire. As gardeners roll the grass & discard cut grasses & fallen debris, near the statue of Hercules, they may a glimpse through an opening to the long canal; the William III column; the menagerie; the tower of the medieval parish church; an arcaded pavilion; a Gothic tower; & a pyramid.

1729-31 Chiswick House & Gardens - 8 Views from Pieter Rysbrack (1690-1748)
1729-31 Pieter Andreas Rysbrack (Flemish artist, 1690-1748) A View of Chiswick House Gardens
Pieter Rysbrack was born in Paris, when his father traveled there briefly from Antwerp, looking for work as a landscape painter. When the family returned to Antwerp, 9 more children were born. Four sons became artists, including Pieter’s brother Michael, a sculptor, who also worked at Chiswick. In 1710-11, Pieter became a Master in Antwerp; but around 1720, he & Michael settled in England, later joined by another brother, still-life painter Gerard Rysbrack. In England, Pieter continued to paint Flemish-style still-life & game pieces; however, he also created a number of topographical landscapes & country-house portraits. Chiswick House & Gardens were created by the 3rd Earl of Burlington & William Kent beginning in 1717. Burlington commissioned 2 sets of paintings of his house's evolving landscape, & he was Rysbrack's most important patron. From the early 1720s, the gardens at Chiswick were in a constant state of transition. Burlington & Kent experimented with new designs, incorporating mock fortifications, a ha-ha, classical fabriques, statues, groves, faux Egyptian objects, bowling greens, winding walks, cascades, & water features. Rysbrack's paintings are full of details that no longer survive: the 2 ponds beside the canal, the elaborate gardens west of the water, garden buildings such as the Bagnio & Casina, & the Jacobean House, which was demolished in 1788.
